Wanderlust Wednesday Foodie Edition: Proper Pie Co.

The other day my Husband and I were craving some honest to goodness British crumpets... Mmm... Back in Seattle we'd just head on down to Pikes Place Market to the awesome crumpet dedicated bakery there.
(So so good, if you're ever that way go!)
But where to go here inOrlando
A quick internet search lead us to Proper Pie Company.
So we popped in the car.
It's a fantastic authentically British and totally yummy bakery.
They bake a variety of sweet and savory pies everyday and even do fish and chips every Friday.
The bakery itself is pretty small and informal with the kitchen area visible and in a tiny roadside plaza but the food...
So yummmy!
They have pies coming out of the oven, pies baked and frozen for travel (One Brit in front of us in line drives all the way down from North Carolina), and pies baked that morning that are chilled in the refrigerated display with along with Brit desserts and drinks.
If they don't have what you want hot, no problem.
They'll make it toasty in a jiffy.
They also have all the yummy shelf goods. Like the British Oxo gravy and my favorite candy, the crunchie bar.
They even had the British Easter candy in stock for the holiday!
(I was sure to pick one up to tuck in my Husband's basket.)
And this Vimto I tried, it's like a blue slushie! One of my favorite things!

If you're in a hurry to fill your tummy, like we were, you can take your hot pie outside to a little picnic table. The staff will bring anything being heated out to you along with some HP (kind of like a British A1 steak sauce).

The pie above was a yummy curry one but every kind we tried was sooo delicious that we couldn't pick a favorite.

And if you want to pack it up and bring it home everything heats to perfection still.

Even this Scotch egg was still yummy heated up at home.

(It's a hard boiled egg covered in a breaded sausage mixture that's lightly fried and sometimes has bacon thrown in there too for good measure.)

Of course, they had crumpets and scones too but we ended up saving those for another day. Lol.

Proper indeed!

If you're local, go!

(They ship and cater too!)

I've always wanted to head down that way...

Wanderlust Wednesday

The Mineral Baths at Terme di Saturnia in Tuscany, Italy

I was fortunate enough to spend some time living Florence during college and while there I always wanted to check out these cool mineral baths in Tuscany.

Being restricted by the time and money constraints of a college kid at the time I never made it. (Although I did get to do lots of awesome others stuff!)

If I ever get back to that wonderful corner of the world it's my mission to go.

I mean, how cool is this?

White Cliffs of Dover in England

Maybe it's the Shakespeare lover in me (it is) or the geology nerd (also true) but I've always wanted to see the iconic white cliffs of Dover in England...

No wonder so many stories are set there. Just Magnifeicent.

Don't we live on an incredibly dynamic planet?

Wanderlust Wednesday

Angel Falls, Venezuela

Have you seen the animated Pixar film Up?

If you have, you've probably watched the mysterious landscape depicted with absolute wonder... And wondered if it was even real... Well, my friends, it is.

I googled it. Right after watching the movie at home one day. Holy moly, it's fantastically real!

It looks like you'd need a helicopter to get around but if that's ever in your budget (and good for you!) then I'd go for it! I really would.

Just check out that amazing waterfall!

There's some pretty awesome geologic forces at work down in Venezuela!

Wanderlust Wednesday

Round Island Lighthouse, MI

I have a dream of owning a little cabin somewhere up on a lake in Wisconsin or Michigan... Wouldn't it be superb to wake up to the fresh crisp air, pack up some coffee and a morning snack, and hike out to this lovely lighthouse?

My kind of morning.

Wanderlust Wednesday

Havasu Falls

Somewhere in the Grand Canyon in Arizona lies Havasu Falls. I've yet to have the opportunity to go to the Grand Canyon but if I ever get to, I want to go here. It's a place that just seems steeped in mystery and history to me. The history of the earth and it's peoples. The stunning vista it provides fuels my desire for adventure.

I've always dreamed of rafting through the canyon and stopping along the way to make camp near places like Havasu Falls. That being said, I have no clue where in the canyon it lies so I'm not sure that's even possible... Lol.

A girl can dream though, right?

Wanderlust Wednesday

Jackson Hole, Wyoming:

I've always dreamed of cozying up in snowy mountains by a warm fire... And Jackson Hole has a wild romance about it to me. I think it would be an amazing place to visit and enjoy the great outdoors the way they were meant to be, rugged and wild. Of course, when the day outside is done coming back to luxurious cabin wouldn't hurt either... Very romantic.

Wanderlust Wednesday

The Southernmost Point in the United States, down in the Florida Keys.

My Husband and I were lucky enough to visit the Northwestern most point in the U.S. this year and I'm really hoping we can figure out a way to get down to the Southernmost point which is completely diagonally across the country from it. I may have grown up in Florida but believe it or not I've never actually made it down to Keys. I've been close but never there.

photo

I would love to take a trip down there even if it's just a really long drive for dinner and a sunset with a really long drive home.

Have you been to the Keys and did you love it? Have you ever tried conch fritters Key Lime Pie? They are my absolute fave!

Kisses,

K

Wanderlust Wednesday: Blue Springs, FL

"Blue Spring is the largest spring on the St. Johns River and discharges a historical average of 165 million gallons per day. The spring pool is circular, with a notable boil in the center and steep sandy banks that rise approximately 15 to 20 feet above water level. The spring run flows about 1,050 feet to the St. Johns River through a dense hardwood and palm forest, with picturesque live oak trees leaning over the run."
And... As you can see from the photo the springs are home to manatees!!! While it's prohibited to swim with the manatees for their own protection there are lots of other areas dedicated to water activities. There's swimming, tubing, canoeing, kayaking, diving... You name it! Or you could always just take in the beautiful view.
Now that I'm a Florida girl again I can't wait to convince my husband to go on an adventure!
Did I mention the manatees? There are manatees!!!
Kisses,
K

Wanderlust Wednesday: Fingal's Cave, Scotland

I've always wanted to visit Scotland. My parents went there when I was young and found the family tartan for my Dad's Irish/ Scottish last name and brought me back the coolest books on Celtic art and how to make it. It just seems like a country set apart.

Then when you add in such awesome geologic features like you find in Fingal's Cave well... I'm sold! I love to explore places with naturally unique geologic features (It makes my nerdy heart sing!) so Fingal's Cave is definitely on my list!

Now if only I could go there... Le sigh...

Wanderlust Wednesday: Lake Baikal

"Lake Baikal

Situated in south-east Siberia, the 3.15-million-ha Lake Baikal is the oldest (25 million years) and deepest (1,700 m) lake in the world. It contains 20% of the world's total unfrozen freshwater reserve. Known as the 'Galapagos of Russia', its age and isolation have produced one of the world's richest and most unusual freshwater faunas, which is of exceptional value to evolutionary science." Via Unesco

It's always seemed like such a stunning environment and magical place! Any time there's a documentary on about it I always watch it!* If I ever got the chance to go there I definitely would. I think I'd prefer winter over summer though in spite of the scary cold. Brrr... It just seems like some sort of fantasy wonderland all frozen over... Tis' almost the season you know!**

Kisses,

K

*Ok, so I watch most nature documentaries when I see them come on much to my Husband's chagrin. But I just really love nature!

**Yes, I know it's still October but the Christmas decorations are already out at all the stores and they keep giving me the side eye pressuring me! Sheesh...

Wanderlust Wednesday: Falling Waters

I was born in Pennsylvania and remember studying Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water in elementary school but being too young to go.. :/ You had to be at least nine years old.*
But ever since then I've always wanted to go some day.
(How gorgeous is this shot of it in the full thralls of Autumn by Robert Ruschak?)

"Home Facts:

  • Description: A mountain retreat for the Edgar J. Kaufmann family of Pittsburgh, owners of Kaufmann's Department Store:
  • Residents: Edgar Kaufmann Sr. (1885-1955), Liliane S. Kaufmann (1889-1952), and their son, Edgar Kaufmann jr. (1910-1989). The home was owned and used by the Kaufmann family until 1963, when it was entrusted by Edgar Kaufmann, jr., to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.
  • Design and construction:Designed in 1935 by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) The main house constructed 1936-38, followed by the guest house construction in 1939
  • Final cost: $155,000 (Included $8,000 architect’s fees, and $4,500 for installed walnut furnishings)
  • Square footage: The main house uses 5,330 square feet. (2885 sq. ft. interior; 2445 sq. ft. terraces) while the guest house uses 1,700 square. feet.
  • Paint Colors: Wright's desire to create a unified and organic composition limited the color palette at Fallingwater. Only two colors were used throughout: a light ochre for the concrete and his signature Cherokee red for the steel. PPG Pittsburgh Paints has worked with Fallingwater to develop eco-friendly paints that withstand the environmental challenges of the site. They have also created a series of colors inspired by the building and its surroundings. For more information click here.
  • Visitation: 4.5 million people since opening our doors in 1964, with 160,950 in 2011.
  • Preservation: The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy has preserved Fallingwater since 1963, with a major structural repair in 2002 strengthening Fallingwater’s cantilevers to prevent collapse and future deflection.
  • Surroundings: Surrounded by the WPC’s 5,000 acre Bear Run Nature Reserve.

Notable Facts:

  • Fallingwater was featured on the cover of Time Magazine, January 1938
  • Fallingwater is the only major Wright-designed house to open to the public with its furnishings, artwork, and setting intact
  • Frank Lloyd Wright once suggested that the house’s concrete surfaces be coated in gold leaf."

Frank Lloyd Wright is both mine and many others favorite architect for a reason... His work is simply amazing and speaks to the eyes and the soul.

If I ever get a chance to get up near there again I'm definitely going! Would you?

Kisses,

K

*I know, I know, I've always had a nerdy and artistic bent to me but I love that.

Wanderlust Wednesday

Today I woke up dreaming of far off places... Since I can't just pick up and leave right now I decided to add some travel themed details to my outfit instead:

I love this shirt that I picked up on the Paciffic Coast of Mexico. The cheery embroidery and lightweight textured fabric are a perfect fit for Florida's long end of summer days.

A mala (prayer beads) from India and my necklace of travel charms I made that I take everywhere.

My travel charm necklace consists of a salvaged/ re-worked by me vintage chain and pearl extender, a vintage heart lock clasp from the Husband, a July birthday necklace bar (each of its four sides describes a facet of that months personality) with a ruby briolette, a vintage locket also from the Husband, and a St. Christopher Patron Saint of Travelers medallion from the San Juan Capistrano Monastery in California.

I love to curate little collections of cool vintage charms and put them together in an unexpected way and these ones always feel like a talisman of sorts for me. So they go everywhere I go.

I also layered on a necklace made with some apatite (the vibtrantly aqua blue stone pictured above) that I found on the San Juan Islands in Washington.

What do you like to buy when you travel and do you have any special pieces that you won't leave home without?

Mostly I come home with accessories that I plan to hand down to family someday (I'm a sucker for an heirloom) and I always travel with my curated charm necklace that I created.

Kisses,

K

Wanderlust Wednesday

Today I give you Russia.

Siberia to be specific, Lake Baikal to be most specific.

Hear me out: Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world and despite the extreme cold the area is teeming with all sorts of life! It's a fascinating place and the nerd in me tortures the Husband by forcing him to watch most nature documentaries we come across and all water related nature documentaries... (Just ask him about Nature: A Duckumentary.) It looks harsh but so stunning on the screen. Any rate, how gorgeous are these unique coral formations in the lake?

Wouldn't it be a dream to see them? Of course you'd have to bundle up like nanook of the north but I think it'd be worth it. (This is even easier to say while I'm visiting in sunny Florida, ha! Sorry Seattle...)

Would you go to Siberia given the chance? It's looks stunning!

Kisses,

K

Wanderlust Wednesdays

I think I'm going to try something new for a bit and see how it works out; Wanderlust Wednesdays.
There are so many places in this big awesome world that I'd like to explore and I thought it might be fun to share some short snippets of them that continue to inspire my wanderlust.
I give you, ancient carvings in New Zealand.

New Zealand is one of those places that continues to inspire me with its diversely mysterious landscape. It's so cool! No wonder they used it to represent Middle Earth in the Peter Jackson films. It seems like its full earthy and ancient mysteries like the carving above. As Liz Lemon on 30 Rock would say, I want to go there!

K
